Swimming With Melanie

This past weekend we took Malanie swimming at a local "pet resort." Ohhhhhh Ahhhhhhhh. Very fancy shmancy.

If you've been reading this blog for a long time, you might remember that we took Molly for a swim back in the day too.

If the dog is into it, I'm very pro-swimming. Especially for senior dogs. It's a great low-intensity way to get exercise. If the dog has arthritis (which many seniors do) swimming helps to get them moving around without running and jumping, so it's easy on their joints.

Plus, watching a dog swim is just about the cutest thing ever.

So when I found out that a new swimming facility opened up in the area I knew I had to go check it out. Melanie has been swimming in the past, so we know she likes it, but she's never been in a real pool before. She's only swam (swum?) been swimming in rivers and creeks, so a pool was a brand new experience.

First we suited her up in a life vest. She can swim fine without one, but the vest makes it easier for the person in the water to help guide her. I also think it made Mel a little less cautious about the whole thing since she didn't have to work so hard to stay afloat in the water.

She is so stinkin' cute in that vest.
Then it was time to hit the water. I'm not going to lie, Melanie didn't take to it quite the way we had hoped. Even though she's always loved outdoor swimming, she had second thoughts about the indoor pool. We definitely had to cajole and encourage her to walk into the water, but she didn't flail around or fight us too hard on it. Some dogs go NUTS if you try to get them in the water, but Melanie didn't do that. She was just hesitant about it.

It probably also helped that we brought out some really stinky peanut butter and bacon flavored treats to reward her whenever she walked in the water. She loved those.

Once she got the hang of it she started swimming on her own, albeit with her "concerned face" on. But look at that rockstar doggie paddle she has going on! She's like a baby seal the way that she swims in that water.

And the swimmer was always right next to her to guide her around the pool. Mr. T and I walked around the edges to encourage her to swim towards us.

Even though Melanie wasn't quite sure about the whole "swimming for her life" thing, she loved the swimmer she was with. Every time she was out of the water she'd trot right up to her like "look what I did!" with her tail wagging. Uber cute.

We made sure to give Melanie lots of breaks from the pool. She'd swim a lap or two and then we'd let her out of the pool to walk around and feel normal again. We didn't want to terrify her by making her stay in the water the entire time we were there. Plus, she's old, so goodness knows she couldn't swim for that long anyway. But by the end of it she really started to get into it more and seemed to have a good time doggie paddling around on her own.

Of course I caught some it on video too:

When swim time was over Melanie got toweled off by her new best friend. She seriously loved that swimmer to pieces. I have to remind Melanie sometimes that she lives with us, and that no, she cannot go home with whoever gives her the best treats and most attention that day.

The whole pool experience lasted for less than an hour, but, for Mel, that was plenty of excitement for one day.

  1. No. Freakin'. Way.

Doggie pools - those are a thing??? Holy crap I wish we had one of those in Nashville, that is freakin' awesome! Oscar would LOVE that, and I've wondered with each foster dog if they'd like the water, but there aren't a lot of good places to take them around here. There's a spot at a nearby river that a lot of people take their dogs, but it's "unsanctioned" to say the least, it's actually part of a city park so technically dogs are not allowed off leash.

I WISH WITH ALL MY MIGHT for an official dog beach, or dog park with water...or a year round doggie pool, how freakin' cool is that?!?

Looks like Mel had a great time! I am not showing this to Oscar, he would be too jealous.

    1. I've heard that a lot of "human pools" will actually hold doggie swim days the day before they close at the end of the summer - maybe you could look into that? We've never done one of those because that many dogs would freak Melanie out, but I've heard a lot of people have fun at them!

  3. We have a great dog beach up where we dock our boat... Corb loves to swim and we also keep his life jacket on because it makes it easier to get him on and off the boat when we've anchored in the middle of the lake! Loved the video!

  4. That looks like so much fun! We had an indoor doggie park here with a pool but I've never been. It's on the list!

  5. I remember you doing that with Molly and I thought it always looked so great. Mr. B's foster mom lived near a lake, but he was too musclely and would always sink. I always wanted to try swimming with our guys.

  6. This is about the cutest thing I have ever seen in the dog blog world. Holy cow. I was cheering for her while watching the video and got all teary eyed (I'm a total sap) when she was all proud getting out of the water. There's something so sweet about the older gals having their own activity that they are proud and happy to do.

Is this something that you set up on a weekly basis, or can you just do single "swim lessons" with your dog?

    1. I'm a total sap too. T frequently tells me that I look like a "proud mama" when I see the dogs do things like this, haha.

You can do swim sessions as little or as much as you want. We just brought her for this one time and haven't set up another time to go, but we'd like to when we can. We think if she really got to a few times in a row she'd enjoy it more and more.

  7. Wow you are SO RIGHT swimming dogs are SO CUTE! Plus I think black dogs in water look like sea lions and that makes me happy. GO MEL! I love your pack...now how do you think Moe would do?

    1. haha, I think Moe would sink like a rock! His legs are too small and his body is too big to stay afloat on his own. I think he'd do great with a life vest though!

  8. Looks like they had a good time. I took Lola swimming a couple times and she hated it.

  9. Oh my gosh, she is such a cute swimmer! I wonder how Murphy would react to a swimming pool. We buy plastic kid pools for him to go in when he's outside in the warmer months, and he loves those. And of course we take him to the lake, and he loooooooves it. This is an old video, but check out his awesome water retrieving skills:

He actually didn't know how to retrieve when we adopted him as an adult dog. But he picked up on it quickly, and now it is his absolute favorite game.

  10. I need to find this place. I have wanted to see both of ours in the water, but was worried about a lake/ocean since boxers are known to sink like rocks. What a neat idea!!

  11. Wow I had never heard of dog pools! Seems like a great idea and a fun way to switch up the exercise routine with the pups.

  12. How adorable! Looks like she had fun. Koira loves swimming too. When we visit my mom in the summer, Koira takes off for the pool whenever she gets too hot and has a little paddle around. We've never been to an actual dog pool though- closest thing is the Dog Days the local outdoor pool has before closing for the season (which is a total blast)

  13. This is awesome! I love her face :) Maybe we will try to get the pooches to swim this summer, I have a feeling Brodie might sink though... Hmm

  14. ohhhh! the vest! she looks so proud, even with "concerned face". it's like she's concentrating super hard on making sure you're proud of her. or, to get the stinky treat.

  17. I loved this!!! I wish we had a doggy pool Zoe could try. We took her to a dog beach once, and she loved it...though she was afraid to go into the water once she couldn't touch the ground! Thanks for sharing!

  18. I think I hit an all time record for number of "awwws" while reading your posts. I love how her little toes are all spread out while she's swimming! Skye only realized this past summer that she loves to swim, especially if there is a stick involved.

  21. She looks so happy and content after the swim, such a gorgeous girl and I love the doggie vest. My dear old girl loves a swim but the dog friendly pool near us closed down and we can't always take her to the beach, great way to exercise a dog with arthritis.
