I Have A Confession To Make

I think Nemo is sort of... ugly.

Now before you jump all over me, let me say that I think Nemo is adorable. He is so darn cute I can't stand it sometimes. I get such a kick out of him and his grumpy face, I couldn't possibly love him more.

But that doesn't mean he's a beauty. Let's face it, you'll never see his face on Dog Fancy.

I try to post flattering photos on the blog, so you're used to seeing this handsome face:

But, this is also a typical Nemo face...

And even with my bias towards posting flattering photos of Nemo, it's no secret that he can look gargoyle-ish.

He has crooked little teeth.

Itty bitty little ears.

Oddly long nails.

A waddle worthy of it's own episode on Ally McBeal (anyone remember that?).

And icky skin tags all over his body.

Those aren't exactly marks of beauty.

Still, with all his little superficial imperfections - even though people cross the street when they see him because they think he looks mean - he's one of the biggest love bugs I know. Five minutes with him and even die-hard pit bull skeptics are won over. Nemo epitomizes the idea that you can't judge a book by it's cover.

I think people can learn a lot from a dog like him.

  1. It's so funny because all the things you listed about Nemo(I adore his nails the most) is what I find most adorable about him. But then again I love pugs and all animals with smushy faces so maybe I am biased.

    1. I think those things make him extra cute too! It's so funny though because non-dog people always laugh at me when I talk about how cute I think he is. They just don't get it!

    2. I second you, Froggy! :) I love his waddle! (And totally remember Ally McBeal).

  2. I think he's beautiful...but then I tend to like the non conforming beauties :) The second picture reminds me a face that Brutus sometimes has that we have yet to capture on camera - his "sleep face." Sometimes he wakes up and one whole side of his face is smooshed up and we can't help but smile (or laugh really loud!).

  3. awe, sweet post! I had an "ugly" dog once named Spanky and I thought he was the cutest little guy in the world. I think when you love something it becomes prettier/cuter/more handsome in your mind!

  4. I've always found Nemo adorable - in a "I've earned my skin tags" sorta way. You can see wisdom in his eyes, even when his ears are looking particularly gargoylish.

You must be one amazing photographer because I've never seen an ugly Nemo! :)

  5. I agree with Sarah - I've never seen an ugly Nemo either! But as they say, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder," and I think that all of your readers have grown to love and appreciate Nemo for the dog that he is, which makes him that much more handsome/adorable/squishable/awesome!

  7. First of all, I think before you write a post like this about my boyfriend, you need to consult me. Second of all, this was truly a beautiful post. I hope you framed that last pic somewhere.

  9. i love this post and think it is sooooo true! people always become more or less attractive based on their actions, quirks, personalities! the prettiest person on paper could very easily become ugly, and the plainest jane could become beautiful based only on that.

  10. Love this post! When I was first adopting Miss M, I thought she was the ugliest dog. I kept telling everyone about this ugly, but cool, dog I was adopting, and I was trying to thing of appropriate ugly-girl-dog names. I was so confused when people would meet her and call her beautiful. I feel like Nemo is so much like this; I always thought he was gorgeous. And like Froggy, I love all the things you named.

    1. Nemo and Ms. M definitely have that in common then. When we first adopted Nemo I told people that we got this awesome, but not-great-looking dog and half of them told me I was nuts and Nemo is soooooooo handsome, and the other half laughed along with me and loved his personality. Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder.

  11. I wish you could meet Cai. He is my Nemo. I have always said he looks like a big, ugly "junkyard" dog. His back end is higher than the front, his ears are huge, his back is crooked, he grows skin tags, and bumps like crazy, he is a dark brindle like Nemo, and a lot of people assume he is a pit mix even though he is 100 pounds of tall skinniness. All this said, he has beautiful eyes, and the orange in his fur shines in the sun when he lays in the yard, he cuddles better than anyone, and the end of his muzzle ( the Mush I call it) is the sweetest thing. I think he is beautiful, and ugly, and just wonderful. Now I'm feeling extra sappy, and must go hug both of them.

  12. our carson has, well, a big craggy head because his skull got crushed when he was a puppy. in addition to stunting his mental growth (he still behaves like an 8-month old puppy), he has a tendency to look like the crypt keeper-- all jagged edges. but man-- pitties just have personalities that make them the belle of the ball. i love nemo's long toenails! i bet he makes the best tap-dancing noises.

    1. I never noticed that about Carson's head before! I had to go back and look at your blog to really notice his head. He's such a cutie though it just adds to his allure.

  14. I adore your Nemo! I definitely project all my miss-my-own-ugly-old-pooch feelings onto him. I get extra excited about your Nemo updates because they fill the Buster hole a little bit.

  17. You seriously could have been writing that post about Dozer. He is possibly the grossest dog ever: stinky, drooly, floppy, pushy, and "scary" looking. However, he is also the sweetest dog ever. We had a brindle bulldog when I was about 18, he was my dad's baby. He'd always wanted a bulldog and he'd picked out Arlo himself. But Arlo had a mental disorder and would have these strange seizure-type situations where he would panic and attack anyone around him; me, my friends, anyone near the front door if the doorbell rang, our other dog, and finally my father. They tried everything; meds, holistic healing, a freaking doggy psychologist, but after he attacked me, then our pug, then my father, in sequence, the vet decided there was nothing else we could do and they were forced to euthanize him. My dad was literally scarred for life. The point is, Dozer looks shockingly similar to Arlo. My father was terrified of him for the first year we had him, but Dozer eventually won him over and now he comes by just to visit the dogs. It's amazing how a great personality can win out over the most disgusting smells and looks... lol
