In the interest of full disclosure (and having something to blog about...) I'm sharing the half-completed things I've got going on around the house. Here's project number one...
If you follow me on pinterest you may have noticed that I've pinned a few fauxdenzas. If you don't follow me on pinterest (you should! tsk tsk...) and you have no idea what a fauxdenza is, a fauxdenza is a fake credenza. They look like this:

All you need to make a fauxdenza are a few Ikea kitchen cabinets and some plywood, then, Wally!, awesome fauzdenza-y goodness.
For our house, I thought that a fauxdenza would be a perfect replacement for our TV stand. I think it's clear from the old photo below that it was never a contender to stay. The old stand was too small for the TV, it's ugly, and you can't tell from the photo, but it's not standing the test of time very well either. It's starting to fall apart.
In order to use a fauxdenza in place of the entertainment unit, we had to mount that giant TV to the wall because the TV base is actually deeper than the Ikea cabinets that I bought. The Ikea cabinets are 12" deep and the base that the TV sits on is a few inches wider, which would never work.
So, the first step was to hang the TV to the wall.
...Actually, the first step was to decide to move the TV to the other end of the room, so the real first step was to buy a super long cable cord to go around the room (don't worry, it'll be hidden once I get base molding on the walls). Then we bought this mount

| It takes a lot of steps to actually get to the first step. |
The idea of mounting the TV to the wall was scary. It's not easy to let something you've spent so much money on just hang in the air... but it worked! We did it all by ourselves and the TV feels really secure. I may have even knocked the TV once by accident - which may have almost given me a heart attack for fear that it would plummet to the ground - but the TV didn't budge a bit. It's there to stay.
Then came time to install the fauxdenza. Oh happy day.
After going to Ikea - and getting a stern look from the Ikea guy about how "they don't recommend these cabinets for anything except the kitchen" (to which I say pssssssssht! those Ikea guys are so by the book...) - I bought three AKURUM cabinets, and doors for each. And handles. And hinges. And those little things that keep the doors from slamming closed. And rails to hang the cabinets from on the wall. It's amazing how this stuff adds up when you're buying it...
Anyway, I toted my haul home and was happy until I realized that three cabinets would really be one too few for this wall. It's a big wall and a big TV, and three cabinets would look small and weird. Four cabinets is the number I need.

| Don't stress about the wires, they'll be hidden when the fauxdenza is complete. |
In the end, I've hung what I can for now, leaving a space for the final cabinet once I can make it out to Ikea again to buy another one.
And that's how this project remains half finished for now.
Anyone else have a half-finished project they have to wait to complete?

Um, only about a hundres million! We have a huge problem at our house of "good intentions." Those intentions usually consist of a trip to Home Depot and just enough work to make a mess, then we wait six months, then finish the project in a flurry to get it done "before parents come to visit," or "before the holidays," or "before I finally lose my mind and just can't take it anymore!"
ReplyDeleteFirst- I love the title of this post ;)
ReplyDeleteSecond- it looks great! I can't wait for you to get the final cabinet up so we can see the reveal!
I totally understand about the half finished projects. It's a pet peeve of mine, but with so much going on, it's bound to happen. I have been lazy recently and just not started anything. Yes, it's cheating!
My first stop when I'm doing a project like this, or involving any construction or special materials, is our local Habitat for Humanity Restore. They have a ton of great stuff there, and I normally get a steal of a deal.
ReplyDeleteOnly project on the horizon for me, other than sewing stuff, is making a turning board for the dogs for some more training.
A Heartbeat At My Feet - We have that same "good intentions" problem. Thank goodness for visitors because otherwise nothing would ever get done!
ReplyDeleteMrs. Foot - haha, you have a good excuse for not finishing things right away ;)
K-Koira - I need to check out the Restore near me again. I haven't been there in ages...
Oo this will look awesome - when it's done. Hah. We've got a bad habit of getting materials first then waiting a good long while before doing anything with them. Like the random sink, faucet, crown molding, and pile of fabric in the garage. Oops!
ReplyDeleteIt's your same anonymous friend...I love, love, love this project! It looks so great already. I can't wait to see all of the changes in your home!
ReplyDeleteSo many unfinished projects around here! All of the stuff for myself is on hold until I've finished everything for Christmas, I hope I still have the enthusiasm for it when the New Year rolls around.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the finished product! It will make your TV look so much more intentional than the old stand...
ReplyDeleteI had been eyeing these too, and I think it's so great that you've actually tried it. My favorite part is that it is furniture you can sweep under. And is something going to happen if it's not used in the kitchen?
ReplyDeleteIf Big Carl doesn't stop peeing on the carpet we will be starting on makeover at our home soon...
ReplyDeleteStop on by for a visit

Pitties - I can't imagine what could possibly happen since they're not in a kitchen. I think the Ikea guy heard me mention that the TV would be involved somehow and just got overly cautious, haha.
ReplyDelete@TwoPitties - I second having the fauzcredenza hung and not on the floor. So, do the Ikea police come out and check exactly where their cabinets are?
ReplyDeleteMy project is relatively simple - I want to paint walls but I have never done it so am terrified! LOVE the DIY info - keep it coming :).
Oh goodness, I totally feel your pain. I have a slew of projects I need to get crackin' on. In other news, I love the fauxdenza you've started!!
ReplyDeleteI love where this is going! You just gave me an idea for my house :).
ReplyDeleteThat is so fabulous!!
ReplyDeleteVery fun! I like how that's going to look!
ReplyDeleteI love Ikea! It is an amazing place. =)
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, I have too many projects that I'm in the middle of right now. It's a way of life, haha.
Hi Y'all,
ReplyDeleteMy Human has a project going at the mountain house that is partially done and partially still in the boxes in the 2nd guest room. At the shore she has to start a clean out the clutter project. It's been 2 yrs since she last did it.
My Human says you are very brave takin' on that project with the TV and fauxdenza. She would never have the nerve to start.
Y'all come back now,
Hawk aka BrownDog
It looks great! I would recommend you call your cable company and have them install a cable connector underneath (hidden) the TV UNLESS, you can do that yourself? I think it's going to be a challenge to hide that cord, no?
ReplyDeleteI love that you are fearless when it comes to your interior design!
xM
PS I'm currently sitting in my un-finished office.
love it! its looking great...what do those ikea guys know?!
