Now on with the real post...
About a week ago Mr. T and I found a small pea-size lump below Nemo's right ear. We're super vigilant about having any odd lumps and bumps checked out on Nemo, because he's had a mast cell tumor before and it's important to catch them early before they turn into something worse. We had the vet take a look and while chances are good that it's nothing, he was concerned enough that he recommended having the lump removed. So that's what we did yesterday.
And now Nemo looks like Frankendog.

Unlike last time, Nemo wasn't put under full anesthesia to have this lump removed, so he was back to himself pretty quickly. There was no "drunk dog" behavior to get over this time, and Nemo was feeling good again by the time I picked him up from the vet just a couple hours after the procedure. A little sedation and they were able to remove the whole lump (plus some "margins" to make sure they got everything, which is why the incision looks so big).

| Even though it was a relatively small procedure, that didn't stop me from worrying about him all day. |
And, while the vet was at it, he also decided to zap off the wart under Nemo's eye too. The wart was another thing that didn't really have to get done right now, (it never bothered me - unlike the skin tag which actually did bother me because it was so gross), but I could tell it bothered our vet. I like to think that Nemo's view is a little clearer now that it's gone. (To be fair to our vet and to make sure no one gets the idea that he just likes removing stuff for no reason: the wart could grow over time making removing it in the future necessary so doing it now did make sense, it just wasn't an immediate concern.)

| That wart may be gone now, but Nemo's face remains as cute as ever. |
While he we was at the vet, we also had a blood test done for Nemo's isulinoma. When Nemo's insulinoma diagnosis was made, it was based on the symptoms he was exhibiting when he had his seizure, but they couldn't see anything definitive on the ultrasound they conducted. We've been treating Nemo based on the assumption that he does have it, but I admit that T and I have been mixed parts skeptical, hopeful, and cautious that there's a chance he doesn't have it. We've been testing his blood glucose levels regularly (I owe you a post about that) and he's tested in the normal range every single time. It's still much more likely that he does have insulinoma (three different vets now have all said that they think he has it), so I'm not getting my hopes up or anything, but given his results so far we wanted to make sure with this test (which we were told is pretty new so that's why it wasn't done before).
When I finally got to bring Nemo home yesterday - after all that testing and sedating and lump removing - I thought the little dude more than deserved a nice frozen peanut butter filled Kong.

In a few days we'll get the test results back - to find out if the lump that was removed was a mast cell tumor and the blood test for his insulinoma - and in a couple weeks he'll get his staples removed when he's all healed up.
Until then I'll be hanging out with my little stitched-up Frankendog.

Awww, poor Nemo! Luckily, he's right and chicks totally dig scars....Ginger is drooling at the screen right now admiring his stunning good looks! ;) Hubba Hubba!
ReplyDeleteAww, such a cute Frankendog. I just love his face so much. Blanche has skin tags too (we refer to them as "extra nipples" because we're really mature).
ReplyDeletePoor Nemo! It's so great that he has awesome parents like you two who keep an eye on him so closely. He is still as handsome as ever!!
ReplyDeleteAspen has a huge skin tag on her belly and it keeps growing. I am almost to the point of having it removed, but like you I don't want her to undergo any "cosmetic" stuff just because I don't like it.
Ah Nemo, those scars are gonna heal up real nice, maybe you wont even see them in a few months.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad your humans take such good care of you.
But wow, how impressive that you were concious when they did it. Your amazingly strong.
Bert
Poor Nemo! It looks like he's recovering nicely thanks to that frozen Kong. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that the test results come back with good news!!
ReplyDeleteAmanda - We call them extra nipples too, lol. We are equally mature ;)
ReplyDeleteHandsome boy.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes to handsome Nemo for a speedy recovery! We just went through this 2 weeks ago with a growth our boy developed inside of his ear. It ended up being benign, and after a little time in the cone of shame, he was good as new! I sympathize with how you must be feeling, because I felt sick to my stomach until the surgery was over and the biopsy came back clean. I'm so impressed Nemo didn't even have to be sedated to have his lump removed. What a sweetheart.
ReplyDeleteNemo and Buster should get together and compare scars - Buster is always having to go and get suspicious lumps and bumps removed at the vet.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear Nemo checked out fine. It looks like he would be willing to do that everyday if means he gets a peanut butter kong

ReplyDeletePoor baby! Here's to a speedy recovery! :)

I am diligent about lumps with my Sadie as well. She has had a couple of lumps removed that were mast cell. Since those, we have also had other lumps removed that turned out to be nothing. But, better safe than sorry. Hope he heals quickly. I love his brindle coloring, by the way!
ReplyDeletePoor Nemo, what a good sport, def deserved a kong! Im glad your vet is viligant and you are taking such good care of him. He is one of my fav pup faces.
ReplyDeleteNemo is so patient, and I agree that the chicks do dig the scars. We love frankendog.
ReplyDeleteNemo is adorable with or without scars, and while I personally found the little eye wart endearing, I agree it's prudent to remove it while you had the chance. We'll be crossing paws for Nemo's results to come back all clear!
ReplyDeleteThat's the most adorable Frankendog I've ever seen. I actually like staples and scars--they look cool.
ReplyDeleteFascinating to hear about all your skin tags and lumps. Lamar has a little one under his eye too, which I'd like to remove if he has to be under anyway. There are also some subcutaneous fatty lumps that are just lipomas and not gross, but I've been instructed to watch them as they could grow and turn into something different, as you note.
You must feel satisfied having all those things dealt with. And Nemo looks happy and very handsome with his peanutty Kong. What a sweetie.
Such a handsome little devil, with or without the needlepoint work :) I'll say a prayer that all Nemo's tests come back clear.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice weekend.
xM
What a darling face. Hope everything turns out A Okay.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed my visit to your great blog...
ReplyDeletehugs and belly rubs to the pups,

Oh, I sure hope it's nothing! He is probably feeling very spruced up now without all those bumps and things marring his good looks ;)
ReplyDeleteI love his facial expression!!!
ReplyDeleteBTW, I came back with a new blog (umbrellaisland, dunno if you remember :D)
I'm glad to see Nemo's feeling well enough to enjoy his Kong. I hope the test results are good. We'll keep our fingers crossed.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the pictures are graphic but I am a tech and have seen a lot worse :) Nemo is such a cutie! Happy to hear his blood test results are where they should be. Does your vet use a laser to cut? I was just assuming he did since he was able to easily remove those skin tags.
ReplyDeleteHurray for happy and healthy Nemo! We have ALSO found peanut butter to have magical healing powahs.
ReplyDeleteYup, chicks do dig those scars ;)

Glad Nemo is doing well!
ReplyDeleteAlso, Freckles has a huuuuge, gross skin tag on his leg. It doesn't seem to bother him, but it's REALLY starting to bother me. Ick. Hadn't heard of another dog with them until now.
I was searching back posts after reading your latest one, to find out about the insulinoma diagnosis. I googled it... a tumor of the pancreas?? That doesn't sound good. Can it be surgically removed? And now I'm so curious about the frozen peanut butter kongs! That cracked me up, about the healing powers. Do you fill it with peanut butter and freeze the whole thing? I have never tried the peanut butter kongs because I figured it would just make a big huge mess. But, I guess the dogs could have it outside. They'd be in heaven with this, I'm sure!
ReplyDeleteBrenda - it's not a good diagnosis :( Surgery could be a possibility in the future, but it wouldn't be a cure and we don't even know how effective it would be. It doesn't seem like we're at that point yet though, so we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.
ReplyDeleteFrozen peanut butter Kongs are amazing! We make them just like you said: put some peanut butter in there and stick in the freezer for awhile and you're good. You can freeze things like pumpkin and yogurt too. The dogs love them :)
