Four Hands = Four Dogs, Part III

Like I mentioned on Friday, we've decided to have another go at fostering. We'vecompletelylostourminds! Yay!

Meet Boo.

I have no idea what kind of dog she is, but she sure is cute. She weighs about 28 pounds (and I thought Heidi was petite!) and is full of love. She loves dogs, cats, kids - you name it, she loves it.

Unfortunately for Boo, the shelter she was at labeled her a "pit mix" despite the fact that she has absolutely ZERO characteristics in common with pitties. She's the wrong size, has the wrong build, her fur is a touch too long, and she certainly doesn't have that awesome square "fat head" pittie face. It just goes to show that they'll label any dog a "pit bull" if they can't think of something better.

But in the shelter Boo was in, the "pit bull" label also means that the chances at adoption plummet. At this shelter,"pit bulls" aren't available for adoption by the general public. The only way "pit bulls" (I'm using the quotes because it's clear that the label here was misused) can make it out of the shelter is if a rescue pulls them and gets them adopted out. It's total crap and just another example of how BSL doesn't work.

Luckily for Boo, my rescue pulled her anyway. We're a bully breed rescue and while technically Boo doesn't fall under that category, we were her only hope. Her mis-applied pit bull breed made her our type of dog - despite her lack of bully characteristics.

Now we're all on a journey to find her forever home together.

  1. She is so beautiful. And not pit-like at all... I see lab, maybe, but not pit!

Bless your hearts for taking in and saving another sweetie! Good luck finding her a forever home!

  2. Yay! You guys are awesome! Not sure if I totally see the "pit" in her - but she's lucky to be fostered by such an awesome "pit-friendly" family!!!! Can't wait to learn more about her (and see a new subject for your photography)!

  7. Thank you for attempting fostering again. Boo is pretty darn cute. Too bad they labeled her a pit mix, just another breed that gets a bad wrap.

  8. Hi Y'all,

She would be perfect! My Humans would love her, but they have me. I'm so big, they said I'm all they can handle with our life style. :(

I know she'll be grabbed up quickly! Don't get attached!

You know the frightening thing is that the people labeling these dogs have no idea about a breed or breed standards. Suppose you take your little Boo into an area where they confiscate "Pits" and give a great pet a death sentence? It makes you think twice about buying or adopting any dog with a short coat and broad forhead.

Personally, I think the people who make these BSLs are dog haters! Remember even Labs and Goldens are on it!

    Y'all come by now,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

  9. Oh goodness, I think it's ridiculous what they will label a "pitbull." I have had people try to tell me Rufus is a pitbull, and I'm fairly certain it is only because of his brindle coloring. His ears are floppy, his nose is longer, his hair is longer, and his body type is definitely not as..."fit", haha.

  10. The pitbull label is so ridiculous. I would think maybe Shepard and/or lab.

    Good luck to Boo!

  12. She is adorable. I see maybe smooth border collie (not sure how common those are where you are, but they are super common where I live), possibly lab, maybe terrier, like jack russel?

  17. Boo looks like our last foster, Mr. Peeps. Peeps (now Murphy) is living the life in Manhattan and has a vacation house on the lake. Pit mix or not, his new owners didn't care and hopefully Boo's won't either!
