12 Weeks To Better Photos Course - It's On Like Donkey Kong

I got some good responses to yesterday's post about the 12 Weeks to Better Photos course I was considering re-doing, so now it's officially on: I'll be re-starting the course!

The plan is to tackle a new lesson here on the blog each Thursday - so you can keep an eye out for those posts each week. If you decide to do it along with me (I would love that!) you can link to your post in the comments section and on my facebook page. I think it would be so much fun to see how others are doing.

Here's the complete schedule of lessons:

Aperture Basic Training ~ September 8, 2011
ISO and Shutter Speed ~ September 15, 2011
The Color of Light ~ September 22, 2011
Flash ~ September 29, 2011
Composition ~ October 6, 2011
Shooting Indoors ~ October 13, 2011
Shooting Outdoors ~ October 20, 2011
On the Go ~ October 27, 2011
Portraits ~ November 3, 2011
Landscapes ~ November 10, 2011
Your Daily Environment ~ November 17, 2011
Camera Accessories ~ November 23, 2011*

*note: This is a Wednesday because the 24th is Thanksgiving

I've already gotten a few questions about the course from people who seem interested so here's a quick FAQ about it. If you have any other questions just let me know. Remember, this is just for fun and completely informal - so you can expect lots of happy vibes each week :)

FAQs:

Q: So, wait, what is this course thing anyway? Do I have to sign up somewhere?
A: There's no sign-up. No registration. If you want in, you're already part of the club (welcome!). The course is totally online and 100% free. The links above are to each week's lesson and you're free to check them out whenever you want.

Q: I only have a point and shoot... Do I need a fancy camera to do this?
A: Absolutely not! The first few lessons do focus on technical things that you might not be able to control manually on a P&S, but the later courses (for example the ones on composition and shooting in different environments) you can definitely do!

Q: I'd love to do it, but I don't have a blog *frowny face* Can I still participate?
A: You don't have to have a blog either! I'd love to see your photos over at my facebook page if you want to share what you did.

Q: Twelve weeks sure is a long time, I'm not sure that I can commit to that, is that okay?
A: Yup. Do one week. Do 12 weeks. Only do a week or two that seem interesting to you. It's all good. And if it ends up just being me talking about it, well, that's okay too.

Q: I think my photos are lousy and I'm embarrassed to share them...
A: Okay, this isn't a question, but I'm putting out there anyway. Please don't feel like your photos aren't good enough to be shared. The purpose of doing this course is to learn and get better - if our photos were already perfect we wouldn't have anything to learn right? And we won't get better until we learn more stuff, no? I sure as heck don't know what I'm doing, so you definitely don't have to think you do either!

So that's what you can expect for the next few months on the blog (fun, right?). You can also check out my facebook page for updates about the course too. I really hope a few of you will also join in (*hint hint*) and I'm looking forward to playing around with my camera and hopefully getting some new epic photos out of the course. Oh, and I'm sure you can expect some certain dogs to make an appearance in some of the weeks' lessons too ;)

  1. Awesome, I'm looking forward to it! I will have to dig out my camera's manual somewhere to see whether I can control stuff like aperture on it or not.

Have you thought about putting together a linky list every week for this, so people participating can link up and see what everyone else participating is doing?

  2. Hi Y'all,

My Human is so happy you are doing this! She's hoping it will help her get her settings right more often and not have to delete so may pics...not to mention, get 'em set quicker before I'm out of the pic!

My Human has to think about the link up though. We do homeless dogs on Thursday. Hopefully she'll be able to share on your FB though...although she's never gotten a 2nd pic of me on her page. Course she almost never has time to visit there...sometimes it's months. BOL!

    Lookin' forward to it!

    Y'all come by now,

  4. K-Koira - I'd love to do a linky list, but I think they cost money (?). I'll link up to people that participate in the blog posts and hopefully between that and the comments people will be able to click around. If more people join up then I'll think about doing a link thing.

Hawk - Your post doesn't have to be done on Thursdays if you've already got something going on. Maybe you can post on Wednesdays if you want to post? And you can definitely always post on FB!

Patty - Yay! You can find most camera manuals online too if you can't find your paper copy. I know I've had to look mine up a few times that way ;)

  5. I am in! I will post my photo/recap/info etc on Thursdays with you!

Do you think you will do a linky? How will we know who else is doing it so we can go over and check out their sites/photos?

  6. Kyria - everyone who is participating can just leave a comment with a link to their post. I don't know of a free linky (if you know of one let me know!) so I wasn't going to do that unless there's a good amount of interest. Hopefully that will work!

  9. Update: I think I've found a free linky that I can use for the course - hurray! It will go up with next week's post so everyone can share what they've done.

  10. Awesome, looking forward to it! And, I found that I can do at least some adjustments to the aperture on my point and shoot, so hopefully I'll be able to have enough control to participate in most of the lessons!

  11. Am interested in participating in the photo course with you all. Could you clarify something for me?

    * The first lesson "Aperture Basic Training", are you reading the lesson and completing the assignment BEFORE 9/8, or is that the day we begin the reading and then complete the work during the week starting 9/8?

    Thanks,
    Lisa

  12. Lisa - I am planning on having the assignment completed on that day. So on Thursday 9/8, I'll have finished the lesson on aperture and I'll start working on the next week's lesson on ISO and Shutter Speed (and I'll share what I did on ISO and Shutter Speed on 9/15). Does that make sense? I've already completed my pictures for the lesson on aperture if that helps clarify.

If you weren't reading it that way, that's okay! I'm going to leave the linky party open for a long time so people can link up whenever they complete the course, and you're always welcome to share what you've done and learned on my facebook page anytime. I hope that helps!

  13. Kate - That exactly answers my Q, thanks.
Is there somewhere on your blog I can learn more about signing up for the linky party?
    Danke!
    Lisa

  14. You don't need to sign up ahead of time for the linky party. I will include the linky party information in Thursday's post and you can link your photos there :)
