Laptop Issues: Resolved

I've been having some laptop trouble recently that I've had to work around. If you've been reading my blog for a long time, you know that T and I bought this laptop just last year. Since it's still relatively new, I pretty miffed to be having problems with it. Since it wasn't working right, I missed posting daily dog photos on facebook and writing up posts for most of last week. Boo.

The trouble is with the connection to the monitor. There's nothing wrong with the "machine" itself - everything runs fine - but that's worth squat if you can't see what's on the screen. What started as a few white lines across the screen slowly turned into a complete disconnection and whiteness. Not cool.

We looked into having it fixed, but that meant shelling out at least a few hundred dollars and trusting those geeky guys not to lose our machine along the way. Not to mention having no computer for the weeks that it would take them to fix it. I'm way too addicted to the internet for that. So instead, we turned our laptop into a desktop. For less than $200 we came up with this fix:

A new monitor and wireless keyboard and mouse and we were back in business. It's not ideal (I really love the portability of a laptop), but this is working great. In some ways it's even nicer because this new monitor rocks. It's huge!

If you're wondering where the laptop is, it's not far away.

Obviously this isn't the "forever" arrangement. The plan is to have a desk of some sort in our basement so this will go there when the time comes. For now though I can pull it up to the sofa to blog and post pictures of the dogs to my heart's content.

This'll do.

  2. Glad you figured out a workaround. I had a VAIO in college and my screen crapped out, too. I did the exact same thing as you :)

I was recently having laptop issues with my 5 year old Macbook Pro and just bought a new Apple. Lots o' money, but totally worth it so far!

  3. That's such a great idea! When Husband's laptop bit the dust (and it was the screen causing the issue), I wanted to do just what you did. We were able to fix it, but it's a great back up idea.
