I got some great comments in response to that post. Two in particular really resonated with me.

I understand your frustration. I did P90x for a while and didn't finish. I get bored with doing the same thing all the time. I decided to concentrate on running and at the beginning of the year decided that I would do a 5K every month. I haven't quite got the 1 a month thing (due to scheduling conflicts) but have done 6 so far this year plus a 10K thrown in there. My next venture is a triathlon! Just do what makes you feel good!
I think this is a GREAT goal. I honestly wish I had thought of it when I was creating my list. I'm not sure that I can commit to a 5k every month, but I am going to do more races. I'm still slow (probably slower than I was before P90X), but when I did Race for the Cure, I loved having a race to look forward to. Not to mention, it's just plain fun to run with a big group of people.
So right now I'm looking for a race to do in October. It'll give me a little time to get back on my running feet but it's close enough that I'll have to jump back into something right away. I think a Thanksgiving turkey trot would be a lot of fun too, and so would something before Christmas. I don't want to take on too much too soon though so I'm just going to sign up for things that look fun as I see them.

What would you value more? Finishing a certain amount of weeks of a program, or changing up your routine a little? Totally depends on what's important to YOU.
And this is really what pushed me to make the decision that I did. You know what's important to me? Getting fit. Losing some weight. And having fun while I do it. I know that I'm working on lifestyle changes that I want to keep for a long long time. That won't happen if I'm forcing myself to complete arbitrary ends of programs.
I really enjoyed P90X though, so I don't want anyone to think that I didn't find it a good program. I feel incredibly strong after doing those workouts for so many weeks. My arms in particular are a lot stronger than before and it's pretty cool to realize how much I was really doing. And even though there's no straight up running in P90X, I felt great when I went out this week for my first run in a long time. That's really saying something.
I'm glad you made the decision that was right for you!
ReplyDeleteCheck out http://pacersevents.com/. They have a ton of 5K races that you can look into.
i am without a gym at the moment since last week. ugh! i have run 3 times this week.... and i don't love running, but i need exercise. so maybe i will sign up with you again, depending on where and when! keep me posted!
ReplyDeleteUnlike you, I loathe running. If someone were to torture me, all they would have to do is show me a treadmill. But I will agree, you need to find something you love, and try to incorporate a workout into it. Recently, I joined a Dance Fitness class and it's awesome! I'm having fun, and trying to keep up with hip-hop, swing and salsa keeps me on my toes (literally), and before I know it, I have sweat through my shirt and the hour is up. You can do little things, too, like when walking the dogs, switch it up and do some lunges while walking. It's all about giving yourself something to look forward to -- best of luck!
ReplyDeleteGlad you found something that works for you! For awhile I was pushing myself to go use the treadmill at the gym everyday but it was just making me miserable. Instead I found a zumba class and pilates class that I love! I actually enjoy going to the gym now.
ReplyDeleteHere's what my mom tells me everytime I dislike something..."you only live once, gotta do something you love" Most mom's made their kids stick things out, my mom was always on a soul-search with me. You did amazing on p90x, now move on! i love getting your tips on workout and eating though!
ReplyDeleteWho says you only have to do one thing at a time? A mix of exercise is the best thing for your body. Only running with no cross-training or weights will ruin your joints and you will get injured eventually. I mix running (I try to do 2 days per week) with some Jillian Michaels videos 2-3 days per week (Yoga Meltdown and 30 day Shred). The mix keeps me from getting bored and if it's raining I don't have any excuses (and I have a treadmill so REALLY no excuses other than being lazy). I told my hubby that he really needs to get back into exercise because it's so much easier if you are both getting into shape even if it's not literally together (2 kids!).
ReplyDeleteI am SO GLAD I said something that was helpful to ANYONE, but ESPECIALLY you! Do. What. You. Love.
ReplyDeleteGood for you!! I think you have the best attitude. And I thinks it's exactly the attitude that you need when making a lifestyle change and this is why you will be successful! Oh and I love the goal of a 5k every month! What a way to stay motivated!
ReplyDeleteJoin the club! lol. We only made it through about half of the program too. Boredom/routine was a factor, as well as the time commitment every night. I guess it's just not for everyone. I agree, there are lots of other ways to get exercise and have fun while doing it -- to each his (her) own!
ReplyDeletewe did the P90x challenge and while it was fine, I wasn't in love with it. I wanted a lot more cardio and I got bored with the same videos over and over. Now I'm running 3 days a week, doing a bootcamp class 3 days a week and yoga one day a week. It's such a better routine for me and I find I'm in a lot better shape. Good luck!
