I am actually not a puppy person. I like my dogs old and predictable (and house broken!), but puppies are undeniably adorable and handling them at adoption events is more fun than work.
Volunteering at an adoption event is super easy. You show up, hold a dog, and talk to people that pass by. If you don't know the answer to a question there are plenty of "senior" volunteers around to help you out.
The number of people that come by ebbs and flows, sometimes it's a constant flow of interested people and other times it's like the world went on vacation. When it's slow you get uninterrupted puppy cuddles.
Although sometimes you do have to help the puppies out of the trouble they get themselves into.
The older adoptable dogs have to put up with all of the puppy antics too. Luckily bully breeds are a tolerant lot.
About halfway through any event the dogs (puppies and adults alike) start to wind down. By the end, the event is just a bunch of people holding leashes attached to adorable sleepy puppies who aren't going anywhere.
Sometimes the puppies like to sleep in odd places.
I've made a lot of great friends at adoption events. When the dogs are snoozing and traffic is slow, you get to talk with a great group of people who you know by virtue of being there with you, have big hearts and are kind to a fault. I've met some amazing people through volunteering.
I'm proud to be part of the animal rescue community and encourage anyone who has been on the fence about volunteering to give it a shot. Email a group you're interested in and just ask to have your name added to the volunteer email list. Super easy.
I never regret helping these cuties find their forever homes each weekend. Puppy-vision beats television any day.
those puppies are so cute they make my teeth hurt!

And how cute is that brindle puppy??? I love the smooshed face and how funny it looks tangled in the leash. I love adoption events because I get to hang out with another dog for the day. Though we don't get puppys very often; this post was way too cute!
ReplyDeletePitties - The brindle puppy is my favorite of the litter, he's too cute!
ReplyDeleteI too have to comment on that adorable brindle. So, so cute. Though I didn't even know what a brindle was until I volunteered at adoption events.
ReplyDeleteI love it, so many dogs, puppies, and even a few kitties at ours. Last time I volunteered though, I came home with a three month old puppy that is now a member of our household full-time...
This post made me smile :0) Your pictures are so cute and I love that youre a fellow animal LOVA!!
ReplyDeleteHi Y'all,
ReplyDeleteWhat a great day to find your blog...puppy breath! Sigh.
Y'all come by now,
Hawk aka BrownDog
What a great way to spend the day... We've been thinking about it; time to make some calls :-)
ReplyDeletewhat a great post! some of our local rescue groups are constrained mostly by the number of handlers they can get to an event, so i hope your great photos and writing inspire a few people to get out there!
ReplyDeletethese photos are awesome, by the way. did you take them? great eye!
loveandaleash - We run into that a lot too. It's hard to find an equal number of dogs and people - especially when we have so many puppies!
ReplyDeleteAnd yup, the photos are all mine! Thanks! :)
I'm with ya - puppies are great to "borrow", but I like my dogs a little more mature. But...oh my gosh! That brindle guy/gal melts my heart.
ReplyDeleteIt would be hard for me to not take the puppies home!

I am with you on the puppies! Every once in awhile, I forget & volunteer to foster a pup & then I am quickly reminded of just how suited I am to older dogs. That being said, I could stare at these gorgeous pups all day long :)
ReplyDeleteAhh what a sweet post. Miss Janey has reminded me why I adopted a dog beyond her puppy stages! Though she is precious, and who doesn't love a clumsy adorable pup?
ReplyDeleteTee hee. It always astonishes me that people can be brave enough (or crazy enough?!) to adopt a puppy over an older dog. However puppiness in short bursts while volunteering is undeniably fun!

Pittie wrinkles are the BEST kind of wrinkles. I swear it.
ReplyDeleteohhhh, I love puppies lol, especially the rescued kind. :>
I've been volunteering at a weekly adoption event for the past 5 weeks and I love it! So much fun to play with the dogs and our organization rings a bell every time a dog is adopted! The bell ringing always makes me tear up a little!
ReplyDeleteThose are some great puppy pictures! I think working at the adoption events sound like a great idea.
ReplyDeleteAmazing post. And cute pups. Thanks for helping out!
