Weigh-In Day June 17, 2011: P90X Week 1

This marked the first week of my new P90X workout routine. Tony Horton has officially become my new trainer!

The P90X schedule is broken down into three separate phases. The first phase (the one I'm in right now) includes an initial "work super duper hard" period for the first three weeks, and then a one week "let your muscles take a breather" period.

My workout schedule this week looked like this:

Day 1: Core Synergistics
Day 2: Cardio X
Day 3: Shoulders & Arms, Ab Ripper X
Day 4: Yoga X
Day 5: Legs & Back, Ab Ripper X
Day 6: Kenpo X
Day 7: Rest or X Stretch

Here's a video of me talking about how my first week went. For those that aren't into videos, feel free to skip it and keep reading - although you will miss seeing Nemo try to headbutt me.

I have to admit: Week one wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be. Of course it wasn't easy, but I was anticipating buckets of sweat and "OMG I want to kill Tony Horton!" reactions. That didn't really happen. I think there are a couple reasons for this:

(1) I'm actually in better shape than I give myself credit for. I'm still not in good shape. There's no doubt about that, but all that running I was doing definitely paid off. I have pretty good endurance now and I found a lot of the cardio to not be very challenging. A few times I found self thinking "stop the chit-chat Tony and start!"

(2) I don't push myself hard enough. I'm sure this is related to number 1, but I really don't think I worked as hard I could have. I probably need to increase my weights and stop modifying so many exercises. Some things I have to modify (I don't have a pull up bar for example), but I was letting myself get scared and intimidated by some of the moves so I didn't even try them. There's a lot of jumping and high intensity stuff in P90X and I need to go for it more often (even especially when I think I can't do it).

Just like I did with running, I'm discovering that my mind can limit my progress more even more than my physical abilities can. If I think can't do something, I won't try it, and I'll never know if I can do it. Anyone else find that they encounter more mental roadblocks than physical ones when working out?

All that's not to say that the workouts didn't work. I haven't done much strength training, and I really felt it after doing those DVDs. My triceps and gluteus maximus (heh heh... that's my butt) were definitely sore for a day or two. I just know that next week I need to step it up.

After after all of that my weigh-in results were:

Weight Loss This Week: -1.0
Total Loss To Date: -18.0

I had honestly hoped for a bigger loss, but as usual I'm going to focus on the fact that down is down, and I'm heading in the right direction.

Plus it's Friday, so that's always good. Maybe that's why my weigh-ins have been working out so well... even if I have a bad weigh-in I still have the weekend to look forward to.

  2. you are doing so great! and as a former trainer and current group ex teacher.... here is what i tell people.. always start with the hardest version you can handle properly- you can always modify after that!!! let's say pushups- start in full pushup positiion and do as many as you can there, and then drop to your knees. people constantly underestimate their capabilities. push hard!

  3. Love your video, and Nemo is so stinking cute it kills me. Calorie burning vibes coming your way sister, I can definately understand your frustration with a 1 pound loss, but an overall 18 pound loss is awesome so just remember that :). Your doing great! Looking forward to hearing how the progress with p90 is :) happy friday

  4. Kari - Awesome! We'll be able to commiserate, haha.

Cassie - That's such a great tip, thanks! I'll have to start doing that. It's so easy to just start with the modification, but I'm starting to realize I'll never get better if I never try the harder version.

A&A - lol, I call Nemo my little gargoyle. He's such a character...

  5. So proud of you!!! I agree with Cassie! I always try and then modify. But i totally get the mental roadblock. That is definitely the hardest to overcome. But when you do and push through it feels pretty awesome!!!

  6. Awesome on the loss! Im starting p90x back up again next week and I am pumped. Its so much easier to pop in a disk sometimes than it is getting up, getting dressed and going to the gym.

Dont they say 80% of obstacles while working out is mental? I may have made that stat up

  7. Andi - It definitely does! I'm going to start pushing myself a little harder.

Heather - Aren't 93.8% of the stats on the internet made up anyway? ;)

  10. I am so impressed that they did not kick your butt. When I started them awhile ago, I thought I was going to die. But I am a wimp like that. Yeah for weight loss!

  11. Ooh, P90X! My husband and I started that a couple months ago too. We hit it pretty strong for about the first 5 weeks, but then just had too much other stuff going on to fit in the hour-long workout each night. It's quite a commitment! It also wasn't as bad as I expected it to be after everything I'd heard, although I thought plyometrics was pretty brutal! I definitely had a mental roadblock with yoga - I could never finish that workout. Every once in awhile now I'll do the ab ripper since it's nice and short.

Anyway, congrats on your first week! That's a big accomplishment in itself. Keep pushin' on and I hope you make it farther than I did! :)

  12. Great job getting through the first week. I was always told that was the hardest, so you're totally kicking butt!

  13. I have Insanity sitting in my DVD... need to start it again. BTW are you doing following the food list that comes with it? I find the food thing makes a big difference on the scale.

  14. Mrs. Mango - I'm not following the food list that comes with it. I'm doing Weight Watchers (at least I am when I track my food diligently....). The food definitely makes a huge difference!

  15. Congrats on your first week! When you pass the two week mark you are golden. I've done P90X twice and have moved on to TurboFire and Chalean Extreme (both Beachbody workouts also). DId you hear that P90X2 is coming out in the fall?

  16. Kristen - I had no idea! The idea of a P90X2 is really exciting. I've heard good things about TurboFire and Chalean Extreme too.
