High School Reunions & P90X

Despite the title of this blog, I am no longer 26 years old (I know I've outgrown the name...). In fact, now I'm 27, soon to be 28 (ack!) which means it's officially been 10 years since I graduated high school. Not long ago a few rumblings started popping up about a possible 10 year reunion. Would there be one? Have we already missed it? Who would organize it anyway?

Soon enough a few "take charge" people (not me) got one organized for later this fall. Right now I'm undecided about going, but if I do go I want to look as good as possible. Totally shallow and cliche, but there you have it. Really I want to look good and be fit anyway so this is just a "deadline" (milestone?) of sorts.

I've been floundering a bit with my workouts since I ran Race for the Cure, so I thought this would be a good opportunity to start P90X. Completing P90X has been one of my goals from the beginning, and since it takes 90 days to complete, I need to get a jump on it if I'm going to finish before my 1001 days are up. The timing should work out really well before the reunion too (if I decide to go).

If you aren't familiar with it, P90X is a 90 day DVD workout program. There are 12 different DVD workouts that you do on a particular schedule based on your goals. I'll be doing the lean schedule found here.

The workouts are not for the faint of heart. They are an hour+ six days a week, and there is some serious weight training, cardio, and stretching involved. I've done five of the DVDs so far: Cardio, Core Synergistics, Abs, Yoga and Shoulder and Arms. Later today I'll be doing Legs & Back.

The workouts aren't easy, and I'm hardly at my peak physical fitness. When I start to struggle, I've been repeating my new mantra to myself:

Actually, when I say it to myself I tend to throw in a few expletives while I'm at it. I'm hardcore like that.

I'm almost one week into it and so far I'm feeling really good (although my triceps are super sore). One thing I'm already loving is the stretching. I think a lot of workouts don't focus enough on flexibility, but I think by the end of this I'll be like Gumby.

So while I sweat my butt off for my new workout routine, anyone want to give me some advice about whether or not to go to my high school reunion? Right now my big problem is that I don't even remember half the people who are on the invite list, not only does it not entice me to go, but it also makes me feel really old...

I'm not supposed to forget things until I'm at least 80 right?

  1. OK. Here's the deal ... how many of the people from high school have you thought about/wished you could contact/think it would be fun to get together with? Because I ran out of fingers on one hand, I went to my 10-year. I even went to my 15. (On both occasions, with lifelong high-school friends.)

For our 20th, I finally realized that there really weren't that many people I WANTED to see (Those are the people who generally don't come)who weren't still in my life already! :-)

As a result, we had an "anti-reunion" party for the eight of us who remain tight to this day. I made a special photo book from our high school days to the present -- with 8 copies -- and a mock up "life" diploma and presented to each one at the party. It was a fabulous time!

Yeah ... I know how lucky I am. Good luck with your weight loss regimen. It sounds daunting but so worth it!

  2. i didn't go to my 10 yr because i was 8 months pregnant with emmy... but even so, i wasn't interested. i stay in touch with a few people i care about, and that was enough fro me. if you think there are true friends you would love to reconnect with then i think it is worth it.

  3. Nicole - I love the "anti-reunion" party idea. There are actually only around a dozen people (if that many) that I would want to see too so maybe that would work!

Cassie - I completely lost touch with everyone from high school. The part of me that's still 18 years old would like to see some of my old friends, but the 27 year old in me thinks that if I really wanted to see them I would have kept in touch (or they would have kept in touch with me). It's an internal struggle!

  4. I am like you- torn about whether I'd want to go.

My 5 year college reunion was the first weekend in June and I didn't have the urge to go. I still see the people I cared about then and didn't feel the need to rekindle anything with anyone else.

I'd be more likely to go to my 10 year HS reunion if we have one. I went to school overseas and lost touch with a lot of my friends because of it. I think about them all the time and would love to see them again. It doesn't hurt that a reunion would probably be overseas and I can't say no to traveling! :)

  5. Im only going to my 10 year because everyone married each other right out of highschool and now they have all divorced each other so I am dying to see them all in one room. Petty I know but it will be soo soo soo funny

  6. I kind of wanted to go, but that would have involved a plane ticket, car rental, time off work, etc. So it became not that important. I kind of like the invention of Facebook because it has helped me see what everyone has been up to. Interesting workout videos.

  7. I did not go to any of my reunions. they were, IMO, too expensive for an event where I was gonna see a room full of people who I hadn't cared about enough to stay in touch with in the first place!

  8. "You are stronger than you *bleep* think" has been my mantra over the last three weeks as I've started C25K. I saw your inspirational workout mantras on Facebook and have been rotating those in my head as I run up hills that had me completely winded just WALKING before! So thanks, I'm with ya on that mantra!

As far as the reunion, go if you really want to. But I like the idea of an "anti-reunion" party as well.

The people I cared about the most from high school (about two or three) I still keep in contact with - the rest I can check up on Facebook if I really care to know about them now. I would maybe meet up with my old high school choir buddies - now THAT would be fun for me!

  9. I've heard a lot about those work outs but haven't tried them. I think I'm way too weak to even attempt them. I'm focusing on the Couch to 5K program and I'll pick that up again when things slow down next week.

As for the reunion, I don't care about their updates on Facebook, so why would I waste time and money to go back and see them in person in forced social awkwardness? My two cents. :)

  10. Good luck on P90X, can't wait to hear more about how it is working for you. As far as the reunion I would do whatever you feel like, there are so many people from high school i don't ever care to see again but then again it would be interesting to see where everyone ended up ten years later :)

  11. We had a five year high school reunion that I went to last year, mainly to hang out with people I've been in touch with over the years who I knew would be there. It was also fun to see some teachers I was particularly close with while we were there. Alas my favorite teacher was fired after 30 years of teaching (12 at the school) and since I can hang out with my friends outside of reunions, I will probably think twice before heading to my tenth!

  12. Because I am a senior citizen, my high school reunion was laster year. I didn't go. My excuse was that I now live on the other side of the continent. But I probably wouldn't have gone anyway. I remember looking at the RSVP list, realizing no one I liked or cared about was attending. With Facebook, I already keep in touch with my old friends. If I lived in the city, I am sure I'd see them all the time anyway.

Good luck with your work-out! That sounds insane and makes me want to go get ice cream.

  13. I didn't go to my ten year. It probably would have been fun, but I didn't pay attention to when it was, and I didn't really have the time to go.

Have fun with the P90x! Either way, you'll end up stronger, right?

  14. I borrowed P90x from my friend and never even started it because I was afraid. Oh well, I'm making it happen in other ways. I would definitely go to my reunion, too bad I'm 14 years graduated and have never had one to go to! Stupid lazy graduates....bah!

  16. I just found your blog!

OMG...good luck with P90X. It's a beast! We did it 1.5 times I'd say...yeah we are drop outs! Haha! It was amazing and if my husband didn't throw up weekly he wasn't trying hard enough. There was no denying that I wasn't because I would never allow myself to push that hard to fathom puking! Good luck! Excited to hear how you like it!
