This post is part of the Done Is Good reader feature series. If you've done something good, I want to show it off! Learn more about it at my Done Is Good Submission page.
Let's show off how awesome you are!
Let's show off how awesome you are!
Michelle is a girl after my heart. Just like me, she has a list of things to accomplish - 112 before 2012 - at her blog Dream Home DIY and it's full of fun random things. One of the things on her list is to build a fort in their living room and spend the night in it. She and her husband recently decided to cross this one off her list, and while they had a lot of fun, it wasn't without it's some unexpected events! At least it's a night she won't forget!
Man! It's already May and we've done about 5 of these.
We need to get crackin' or this list will quickly turn into 112 Before We Die
So before we continue...uh, I apologize for the cruddy pictures
It was dark and well that's the excuse Im going with
As a kid, making forts was a weekend occurrence in our household.
My little brothers and I would strip each bed of its linens (much to my mothers dismay) and challenge ourselves to "build one bigger than the last".
Justin, on the other hand, had never constructed a fort until now!
Can you believe that??
Resting upon a house worth of blankets, down comforters, and feather beds, we settled in for the night.
And then, somewhere between "Good night babe" and "Sweetie, breakfast is ready" our world came tumbling down upon us.
You see, one of the kitties decided to try out her tight-rope audition across the length of our fort...at about 2:30am.
The following is what occurred within the next 3 minutes:
1. Wingback chair flies backwards crashing squarely against Michelle's face. Sobbing ensues
2. Heavy box perched atop ladder somersaults across the room smashing Justin's thigh. He, assuming he's under attack, begins flailing and kicks the end table holding the opposite end of the tent up....then proceeds to fall back asleep.
3. Michelle, still buried under wingback chair, laundry, and fort remnants kicks Justin to wake him.
4. Justin, finding her predicament hilarious, laughs uncontrollably
5. Michelle is eventually rescued
Ah the memories....
I love goals like this because they are so fun. There's no need to take it seriously and stress out about how something is going to turn out because the whole point is to be frivolous and silly.
I used to build forts all the time when I was a kid too so this post brings back a lot of childhood memories for me. My forts even used to have "rooms" and my brother and I would "hide" in them from my parents, lol. Anyone else a super elaborate fort builder/architect as a kid?
Thanks so much for sharing Michelle! It's a great reminder to not take ourselves so seriously all the time.
What a fantastic goal.
ReplyDeleteI used to build forts all the time. I was allowed to use pretty much anything I could get my hands on, so I had some pretty elaborate forts. Some even stayed up for weeks :) Then when it got nicer outside, I went out and made forts in the woods with trees that had fallen. Man, to be a kid again!
I loved making forts when I was a kid and they were a go-to activity when I was babysitting...the one time I tried to sleep in a fort overnight I ended up in a similar situation and a big knot on my head :)
ReplyDeleteHahaha! Thank you for the fun feature :0) We STILL laugh about that night/early morning. There have been talks of a "re-do" as well!
ReplyDeleteSo fun! And of course, I'm sure the pooches loved it.
ReplyDeleteOMG! At least there were no serious injuries. I had to laugh because it reminded me of my young cousins for whom I would do this all the time when I babysat them. One day, they decided to do this on their own. The 7-year-old boy thought his dads freeweights would work great to hold the elevated coverings in place... until one slid off and hit him in the head. Luckily, it was only a FEW stitches ...
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad no one was hurt because I lol'd at Michelle's witty writing. I'm still giggling! We made forts all the time as kids! My older cousins came over one time and made what seemed like a mansion ( I was 4 or 5), i just remember thinking how awesome it was. My sister and I used to use out clothes line (one of those square ones on a pole) and my mom would pin 4 sheets around so it was like a tent/fort outside. We would just hang out and read or color until it was time to come inside!
