The Day The Kong Died

Pit bulls are notoriously exceptional chewers. They love to just chew away at every possible toy they can, and if they can tear it apart beyond all recognition it's just that much more fun. I've always considered myself pretty lucky because I haven't had a dog that's had an interest in destroying Kongs.

Until now.

It turns out that Heidi likes gnawing the top off for easier access to the inside. Not cool Heidi!

Kongs are the epitome of tough toys for dogs. They are "indestructible," and you can fill them with all kinds of yummy stuff to keep a dog entertained for a long time. Some of my favorite Kong fillables are yogurt, pumpkin, peanut butter, kibble, and baby carrots.

You can even freeze the Kong when it's full so it takes longer for your dog to get everything out. Genius! We give one to Heidi everyday when she goes in her crate. She loves it so much that she races right up there when you pick it up. Can't beat that.

Unless of course she tries to eat the Kong whole. The toy is decidedly less effective when it's in her stomach. So now we've upgraded from our "regular" strength Kong to Kong "Extreme."

Hopefully this will hold up against our new power chewer...

  1. Color me impressed, Heidi! We have two strong chewers (they crack bones all the time) and their two Kongs are still intact. Dented from teeth, but intact :)

  2. My POINTER/LAB mix chewed through a red kong in 3 days. We have had the black one for a while but he hasn't been able to destroy it yet. Much more durable.

  3. Let us know how that holds up! Eddie has yet to demolish his Kong but I know it's probably on the horizon!

  4. Even black Kongs die in our house. But I wish you luck

  6. Mrs. Foot - I couldn't believe it when I saw it! The red one has definitely got a few teeth marks, but up until now it's remain intact!

Melissa - Three days?! Yikes! I hope we have good luck with the black one too.

    Amanda - Will do!

Kari - NOOOO! That's not what I want to hear, lol. I'll bet it's Big Carl that destroys them ;)

    Pitties - I haven't either. I guess there's a first time for everything!

  7. Reminds me of a line from Anchor Man - "You ate the whole wheel of cheese?! Baxter, I'm not even made. Actually, I'm kind of impressed!"

    Impressive little trick, Miss Heidi!

  8. only one of my dogs is a chewer. she rips everything apart. she's even gnawed at the fireplace and corner of the staircase. yes..she ate a stair made of wood. it's like living with a wolverine. there are toys made of tires that apparently even lions cant get through. i forget the name, but i'll do some reasearch and let you know.

  9. Our guy usually takes out the first two layers of the kong within an hour of being given a new one. He leaves the last ring for a while since he likes it when we throw that for him. We've never had a kong last for longer than 4 months, though, even the black ones.

  10. Erin - Haha. Yeah, I was pretty impressed by her "accomplishment." She look so dainty that I never would have thought she'd demolish a kong.

Major Gal - That's crazy! Tire toys sound like a good idea...

Stacy - Wow! An hour?! I really hope the black kong can stand up to Heidi...

  11. Wow that is impressive, and she looks so sweet and innocent :)

  12. Haha! Oh I know that one! We have a mini dachshund who destroys them just to show off I believe! I just checked and there is an extreme ball for her size too...I may have to try it!

  13. Gurl the day you find a toy your pitts can't destroy let me know, Mr. Timmy might be small but that little monkey can chew through damn steel! I stopped buying him toys because he eats everything and I don't want him to get sick or choke on it.

  14. A&A - They made dogs cute for a reason: To fool us!

Jami - A mini dachshund can destroy one of those?! I may have to take back my "kongs are indestructible" comment...

Bri - If we can't find a toy that Heidi can't eat I'm afraid she might have to go toyless too :( I'm really hoping it doesn't come to that.

  15. Havi chewed right through the red one. THe black kong is the only toy EVER she has not destroyed!

  16. oh yes! the black kongs are the best. my great dane has had hers for two years and it's still intact. you can also get radio-opaque kongs, if she swallows them often (sorry, that's just the vet tech in me i guess lol).

  17. Well all hope is not lost, there is also a Blue Kong out now that is said to be stronger than the black even. You won't find it in stores though, online you can. It's royal blue, not the marbled blue puppy ones. Upgrading in size would help too. No huge chewers here, and if I try and be cheap and buy a larger sized chew to save money, if it's beyond Luna's "size" she won't chew it. Luckily we have wyatt now who will eventually take on the challenge.
    Good luck

  18. Wow...I am impressed! The red kong has lived a long life in our house. Hopefully the heavy duty one does the trick for you!

  19. My beagle/boston terrier mix chews like no other. Both the red and black kongs last less than an hour. We once bought a chew toy that was rock hard and guaranteed indestructible or your money back ... 30 minutes later chunks were coming off and her gums were bloody because the material was so hard. Not cool.

And then I found it, the solution to all of my problems. Antlers. They're expensive, but amazing and my dog loves her moose antler. We got a decent sized chunk and while it cost $30, she's had it for 6 months and is still going. I'm pretty much in awe.

  20. Two Grad Students - I hope we have the same kind of luck!

Oleander - Radio opaque kongs? That's pretty neat! Luckily she doesn't really eat them (at least so far). Just a couple wayard bits :)

akgphoto - I've heard of the super blue kong! I think they're used for law enforcement? If the black one doesn't work that may be on my list...

Jenny - I really hope so!

Nikki57 - I still haven't tried antlers. I feel like with four dogs though I'd have to get one for each dog...

  21. you can get antlers a lot cheaper on this site I found, pretty much 3 for the price of one. this guy should really be paying me because I mentioned it on my blog and have since told everyone I know to go there! he doesn't have online ordering though, you have to call. maybe that's how he keeps the costs so low, I don't know: http://antlerchews.com/

  22. Impressive on Heidi's part! I love that first picture, she looks so innocent. I can't say that our dog Dudley has chewed off an entire chunk of his red Kong, but he's done a pretty good job of tearing tiny little bits of it off at a time. We got him the extreme Kong a few months ago, but he only wants to play with the red one! Maybe because it's easier to tear up. :) We do use the black one to stuff food in when we crate him for the day, and overall it's held up pretty well. Good luck with yours!

  23. Heidi wins No. 1 best in dog photos ever seen, and I've seen a lot. If someone had to explain what a dog is with only one photo, this would do the trick! Good work!!!
