Living With Four Dogs

We boldly entered "crazy dog people" territory when we pulled Heidi from the shelter to foster her. We were already crazy dog people, but having four dogs just made it obvious to other people. Before, when we just had three dogs, we got a few weird side glances. But really three is just one more than two, and two is still pretty normal so three isn't really that bad. It can be rationalized.

Four is definitely crazy town though.

There is no rationalizing that.

Now when we say we have four dogs in the house the wide-eyed looks we get make me wonder if I've sprouted a second head or something. But in reality, it's not as crazy as it sounds. Here's a little video I made of a typical weekend afternoon at Casa 26. I was actually watching TV when it occurred to me that this type of "chaos" isn't what people expect in a household with four dogs.

If you can't watch the video, here's the basic gist of it: My dogs are lazy and sleep a lot. Having older dogs has some real perks.

I know we're still crazy for having so many dogs in our house - but it's not quite as crazy as people give us credit for.

  1. I hear ya. Granted we only have two, but people assume they are always running around and being crazy, when in reality they are L.A.Z.Y!

  2. i'm glad to know i'm not the one with some real snoozers around the house! how old is heidi? she is so calm!

  3. Heidi's around 3 or 4 years old. It's hard to say for sure since she was pulled from the shelter. Believe it or not, she's actually the "energetic" one of the bunch!

  4. Too funny. You're totally right, I was expecting chaos but instead there were just a bunch of snuggle bugs!

  5. My parents have 9 (yes nine), so in my book you're still pretty sane. They live in a rural area, but in the house 3 collies, 1 golden retriever, 2 labs, 2 terriers, and 1 sheltie are a handful. Add in their 3 cats and it's really crazy. Each and every one of their 12 animals is a rescue- some were just dumped in their yard when my parents were out.

  6. Is that Nemo I hear making the snoring noises gently as you're talking?

I get crazy looks for having three. Though I think its because the third is an 8lb midget who doesn't really fit with the other too. Ha

  7. I had some friends who had four dogs and fostered litters of puppies on a regular basis plus three cats--now that is too much :)

  9. What a great video, I should show my husband and say see honey four isn't bad so two would be EASY :). Molly is also super lazy, and the vet guessed she is only about a year maybe a bit younger. I just love your sweet Nemo, Molly also just wants to be right next to her humans.

  10. Liz - I like to compare myself to others who have 4+ dogs, we seem normal in comparison! I can't believe people would just dump their pets at your parents' place like that. I'm glad they were taken care of though.

Kari - Yup! That's Nemo, haha. You can hear him sigh/grumble at one point too. He cracks me up :)

A&A - Two is easy! It's only when the dogs start to outnumber the people that things start to get tricky, haha.

  11. LOL. I wish our one dog was even half as lazy as your four! The other day I was talking to a friend who was complaining her dog always slept in so late, till at least ten every day, and I just stared at her. As the owner of a dog who is ready to go pretty much 24/7 I cannot comprehend canine laziness being a bad thing!

Knowing my luck, our second dog will be just as nuts!

  13. I never really realized how old our dogs were getting until we fostered a younger dog. It's kind of weird to have that comparison.

  15. Oleander - I KNOW!! That video makes me realize how badly I need to cut my hair again! haha

Phssst... 4 cats is fine! You have to have at least 6+ before you start getting to crazy cat lady territory ;)

  16. I don't know if you have mentioned it in a previous post but did you guys decide to adopt Heidi or are you still fostering her? Just curious :)

  17. I don't think you're crazy, I'm just jealous!!! I've technically just got the one, but with my boyfriend's dog and his roommate's dog often getting into the mix that's a pittie, AMBulldog and Boxer/lab all on the couch at once. Two of those are pretty high energy and even that works. I may be getting a foster dog soon so I maybe I'll get to do a four-at-once experiment!

  18. We just rescued our 4th dog yesterday. Similar to what you said, 3 was one thing, but am I crazy to have 4 in our house (and not a particularly large house, at that)? I searched "Life with 4 dogs" to see what what show up. I expected the worst. But I came across your blog and it made me smile. For the most part, it's pretty calm here, too. I'm pretty sure my friends and family are still considering an intervention, though. =) Thank you for your neat words and great video.
