Signed Up: Race for the Cure 5k

If you follow me on facebook you already know that I signed up for a 5k last week. It was snowy and cold  outside, so I was inside pondering my 101 list (how am I going to get it all done?!?!) and realized that I need a good kick in the butt if I'm going to meet my running goals.

So I signed up for Race for the Cure.

I actually did Race for the Cure once when I was in high school and have wanted to do it again ever since. It's a huge race with lots of slow people (like me!) so I feel confident that I won't be the slowest person there (plus there are walkers too, so if I'm super slow I'll just pretend I was walking the whole time - ha!).

The race isn't until June 4th, so I have tons and tons of time to get in the running groove again.  Here's the part where I should make one thing clear: I haven't done any exercising this winter. At all. Gotta dust off those running shoes and get back into it. Maybe I'll re-visit couch to 5k? I don't really have much of a "training" plan yet. I do know I'll be pulling out my iPod and creating some embarrassingly Britney/Ke$ha/Lady Gaga infused playlists amazingly cool running playlists full of indie bands and classic rock. Heh.

what do bunny ears and boobs have in common? nothing. it's just a cute picture.

It is a fundraiser, so if you feel so inclined you can check out my race donation page. I've also put a handy little widget up in my sidebar.

Anyone else in the area signing up for this race or done it before? I'm looking forward to getting my pink Race for the Cure T-shirt. Any long-time runners have any advice? I admit, even though it's only 3 miles I'm a little nervous about running it. Guess that means it's time for me to hit the treadmill...

Update: Cassie over at Primitive & Proper came up with the fantastic idea of starting a team for the Race for the Cure 5k. If you're interested in joining us on June 4th email us at kate@twenty-six-to-life.com or cassie8978@gmail.com. See you there!

  1. Good luck! This sounds like the Race For Life that we have in England. The Lady Of The House keeps saying she ought to do it too.....maybe I can persuade her to follow your example and sign up next time it comes around.

  2. ooh- maybe i will do this one! and i am slow, too... like 9:30 minute mile. i am going to see if my mom wants to do it, too- it would be great to get a team of diy-women together! is it too late for you to have a team?

  3. Cassie - It's definitely not too late to form a team. That would be fun! And you would blow by me right now with your 9:30 mile, maybe by race day I'll be on pace with you!

  4. Good luck! I finally got that off my list, but alas I still have a 10k on there! Did you notice the dayzero site is down?

  5. I have no advice but that's one thing on my to-do list for someday. Good luck with your training!

  6. Good luck! You'll do great! I did my 1st 5k this past fall-Susan G. Comen and it wasn't so bad except for 3 hills. I also wasn't prepared like i should've been due to my baby being up all night the night before, didn't drink any water, pants kept falling down, etc. ha! But I'm glad I did it!

Keep us posted on your journey. I love couch to 5k! I'm actually off to run a couple of miles right now.

  7. Good luck, I don't run, but I'm organizing a 5k for the spring, too bad you're not closer, you could run in that!

  8. Kari - I've only checked out the dayzero site a handful of times, so I hadn't noticed. I wonder why it's down?

Titsworth Family - That's so great that you did it! That's funny about your pants - I have that same problem and hate it!

DM - You're organizing a 5k?! That's so fun! If I was closer I would totally do that!

  9. I'm so excited for you! I think having this race goal, and having told everyone, is just the thing to kickstart a winter exercise plan. I'm excited to hear your progress!

  10. I love Race for the Cure! I've done it for two out of the last three years (out of town last year). I plan on doing it again this year- and running it this time!! Maybe I'll see you there :)

  11. congrats!! what a great goal to start with-- even though it seems intimidating at first, it's totally achievable and you're going to feel so accomplished. i've run a lot of races of every distance, so send me a note if you have any specific questions.
    hooray!

  12. What a great goal and great organization!

Your photo made me laugh...Nemo looks slightly horrified, sort of the way my cat Woods does whenever I dress him up :)

Oh and bunny ears and boobies go together if you are Hugh Hefner, just sayin'

  13. Good for you! My life list contains running in a marathon as well. I've always wanted to do it but so far have been much too lazy. Maybe reading about your training will help get my butt off the couch as well.

    Good luck!

  14. Good for you! I'm recently picking up running again too after a hiatus (I hate to admit it, but I have to have a race looming to force me to get my butt off the couch). I think the biggest things that work for me are a)starting each run sloooooow after a nice warmup and stretching and b)following a training plan so you have something to check off! Good luck!

  15. KT - How did I miss the Hugh Hefner connection?! Perfect!

Kristine - I've always thought running a marathon would be a huge achievement! This is only a 5k, but maybe longer races will be in my future!

Amanda - Starting off slowly is always hard for me. I always want to do too much too fast and then get wiped out. I'm definitely a good stretcher though - it's my favorite part :)

  16. There's nothing like a race looming to help you get your butt in gear. I know it always worked for me. Although in my running world, 9:30 is in the category of "speed demon!" lol. Does Nemo like to run? Dogs can be a fun motivator to get out there, because even when you don't feel like it - they always do!

  17. Brenda - Nemo will run, but he doesn't seem very enthusiastic about it. He's more about playing fetch with his ball than running around with us. Melanie on the hand LOVES it. It's a shame she's already 9 years old because she can't go quite so far anymore. When she does run though she's hilarious - she gets so excited!
