30 Day Blog Journal: My Wedding

This post could also be called "How I Got Married Three Times In One Day."

Being the big family oriented saps we are, Mr. T and I thought it would it would be a great idea to have my grandmother officiate our wedding. A little internet ordaining and she'd be good to go. A couple friends of ours had done it without any problems so we were really excited when my grandmother accepted the role.  Only unlike our friends we did have a problem. A BIG one.

Just a few days before our ceremony, my grandmother was called before a judge and he unsympathetically told her no way, no how would a wedding she officiated be legal. Seriously, that judge knew how to kill a bride's pre-wedding buzz.

And into panic mode we went. Our courthouse provided us with a list of JPs who could do the legal work, but one by one they told us that they were all booked up and "young people really should take care of this sooner." Well, duh! Finally, Mr. T contacted the next to last one on our list and told her our sob story of how everything was falling apart. She took pity on us and graciously agreed to wed us over her lunch break (so romantic!).

So she did. And it was great. And it cost about $30. With just our immediate family and a couple close friends, I bawled my eyes out as we got married.

That was the first time I got married.

A few hours later we headed to the place where we spent thousands and thousands of dollars to get hitched (even though now we weren't actually getting married there anymore, but no one else knew that!). My grandmother was still "officiating" the "ceremony" so I had made this great book with her ceremony speech. It was really a beautifully done book if I do say so myself.

Well, guess whose grandmother skipped 2 pages of the ceremony as she was reading? Yup, mine.

The ceremony went something like this: "We are all here to celebrate the marriage of Kate and Mr. T. They have a wonderful relationship. Do you take him Kate? Do you take her T? Now kiss the bride!"

So we kissed. The whole thing took less than four minutes.

That was the second time I got married.

After we kissed Mr. T and I shared a look that said "do we tell her she skipped most of the ceremony or do we walk down the aisle?" Before we could make a decision, my mother piped up from the front row (that would be my grandmother's daughter, so it's ok) "YOU SKIPPED EVERYTHING! THE PAGES WERE STUCK TOGETHER!"

Thank goodness she's the coolest grandmother ever because she laughed. We laughed. The guests laughed. So then my grandmother started over again. From the beginning.

And that was the third time I got married.

Third time's a charm right?

  3. I love it! In Alaska anyone can perform a ceremony once so we had our friend do it. From the time I got out of the limo to when we got back in it was 14 minutes. Thats after I bailed on eloping...

  4. awww..that is just adorable! I love stories like that. I have a funny one about ours. A judge married us at our hall. When he said, "do you Clint take Danielle", he said "I do" right away. The judge paused, then continued by saying "to be your wedded wife.." So he had to say I do twice. It was so cute.

  6. this is awesome, and i'm jealous-- i've only ever been married TWICE in one day! my hunny and i had a family friend marry us in VA, where you can't legally do an internet-ceritification wedding. so we snuck away to the courthouse and did the two-minute ceremony with no witnesses, and then had a full-out wedding in the evening that was not legally binding, but emotionally important.
