Reading: Mockingjay

Mockingjay (The Final Book of The Hunger Games)Mockingjay is the last book in the Hunger Games series and concludes Katniss' experience fighting The Capitol. The first two books lead up to the colonies' revolution against their oppressors, and this book finally reveals what happens.

Overall, I thought this book just ok. Not bad, but not what I had hoped it would be. Once again, the hype overshadowed the actual book. For the most part I felt like Katniss was just being pulled along by others and not making her own decisions - which is one of the things I had liked about her character early on. I also wish that Peeta had been a bigger part of the book and we had been able to see more of the "old" Peeta that so many people fell in love with. And while she ended up with the "love interest" that I was rooting for, there was no real revelation on Katniss' part about who she really loved. Again, it wasn't a choice she made, but one that circumstances left her with.

It was Peeta!

I don't want to get too down on this book because I know a lot of people loved it, but for me it still lands in the "good, but not great" pile. I'm starting to discover this is a pretty common theme: overly hyped books never seem to meet my expectations. Does this happen with anyone else? Do you often find that you buy into the hype so much that the reality of the thing can't live up to it?

In general though, while I thought the first two books were better than the third (and the first was better than the second), it's a good series with some interesting themes. It does make you think about how the lessons illustrated in the stories parallel with real world events and has some thought provoking scenes that make you think critically about the results and consequences of war.

  1. I couldn't agree with you more on everything. Which books I liked best in order, and my exact feelings on the third. Though I never really cared about the love interest as a triangle. There was never really any doubt for me what would happen.

  2. I felt the same way! I was rooting for the one she chose, but I felt like her "choice" was weak. She didn't choose, really. It was more "Well, the other one moved away, so I guess it's you... oh and I guess you're a good choice because of X, Y, and Z." Lame. I dunno, the book just didn't punch me in the face enough (in this case, getting punched in the face would be a good thing) despite the dramatic things that happened. I loved the stories, but I wasn't in love with Collins' writing.
