Little Winky has been at the house for almost two weeks now and I think we're finally falling into a routine with her. Routines are key for any dog, but especially when it comes to puppies. After all, the routine is key to predicting potty time!

The other dogs have also developed very definitive feelings towards her. Molly wants absolutely nothing to do with her whatsoever. If Winky comes near her, Molly gets up and goes somewhere else. It's not fun for her because Winky has decided that Molly's tail looks like a great toy. Luckily Molly is a lover, not a fighter, and tolerates Winky's hijinks with a stink eye and exasperated sighs.
Meanwhile, despite initial appearances that Nemo would be the best "big brother" ever, he has no use for Winky either! Winky is a "mini-Nemo" in looks and personality, but he does not appreciate her efforts to play with him. She's gotten more than one grumpy growl from his direction. We're giving him lots of love to make up for her persistence though and so far he seems pretty content with that.

Instead, The Hubs and I are getting to be experts at redirecting her attention on more appropriate playthings. Most notably, Melanie!
Unlike Molly and Nemo, Melanie is very receptive to the puppy's urge to play. At least once, usually twice a day, Winky instigates play time with Melanie. It goes something like this (but it goes on for about 58 more minutes than this 2 minute video).
the first few seconds are my favorite
And here is a video of Winky and Melanie playing with an old sock. (only the best tug toys for our dogs!)
All this playing has actually made me pretty happy that we have a big empty living room for them! And of course a yard for her to eat sticks in ...

I will add one more thing to this fostering update: Puppies are HARD! She's a great dog, but holy cow! If anyone is thinking that we might be foster failures and keep her for ourselves - think again! I'll miss little cyclops, but I'll also be happy to have my low-key house back again!

She only has one eye, but it sure is pretty isn't it?

At least the puppy has someone to play with!
ReplyDeleteDon't forget, we moved to http://dogisgodinreverse.com
One of the fosters we had wasn't potty trained and she was in heat when we got her. We had to get her doggy pads until we got her into the vet to get spayed. It was quite the experience.
ReplyDeleteWhew! What a crazy household! And yes, she IS pretty!
ReplyDeleteShe is so beautiful!
ReplyDeletePuppies crack me up, but I do not look back fondly on all the lost sleep I had from carrying Baxter outside at all hours of the night (he was sick as a puppy and had to go out more than most, I think).
She's a sweetheart! And BIG! I didn't realize that she was that big until I saw here next to Mel.
ReplyDeleteThat video makes me tired! She is sooooo cute though.
ReplyDeleteI had to laugh about the 'Foster Failure' part. I know people were rooting for us to keep our foster, but fostering really made us realize that we're just a 2 dog household. It is fun to have another dog for awhile. I can see your photography training is working; great shots!
ReplyDeleteI love Winky! I think it's awesome that you took on this temporary fostering gig and I bet it has been exhausting! Those videos were very fun to watch, though!
ReplyDeleteO she is a doll! And her name is adorable! Glad she is doing well.
ReplyDeleteShe is so dang cute!
ReplyDeleteOurs dogs are still young, but I'm glad they don't have the much energy still.
What a bouncy pup!
ReplyDeleteshe is precious! i hope she finds a wonderful home....and soon! :)

These videos just cracked me up! Especially, like you mentioned, the first few seconds of puppy inviting Melanie to play. Amazing!
