Reading: The Help

The Help
I did not think that I would like The Help. I actually got it from the library awhile ago and returned it without reading it. Then I went ahead and got it again because I kept seeing good things about it, but I still wasn't looking forward to reading it. Thirty pages later and I couldn't put it down. This is a great book.

Set in the 1960s, just as the civil rights movement was picking up steam, a young white college graduate finds herself working with the neighborhood 'help'. These black maids have worked in upper class homes their entire lives - cleaning, raising children, and cooking meals - and remain segregated and repressed. As she works to bring their lives to light, she and the maids she works with are increasingly aware of the danger it could bring if they are found out.

This book is everything you think it might be and then some. Touching, funny, and enlightening, it brings a new perspective to one of the most shameful parts of American history. A great great read. Definitely pick this one up.

  3. This is weird- I've been seeing this all over blogland. And my mom just left it on my table after visiting. I think all signs are pointing to me reading this book.

  5. Thanks for stopping by and commenting today! I LOVED this book. And not just because I was about to be moving to M'ssipi...it had such fabulous character development and I felt like I knew each of them. I didn't want it to end!

And BTW - amazing goals in 1001 days - wish I'd have thought of that!
