Set in the 1960s, just as the civil rights movement was picking up steam, a young white college graduate finds herself working with the neighborhood 'help'. These black maids have worked in upper class homes their entire lives - cleaning, raising children, and cooking meals - and remain segregated and repressed. As she works to bring their lives to light, she and the maids she works with are increasingly aware of the danger it could bring if they are found out.
This book is everything you think it might be and then some. Touching, funny, and enlightening, it brings a new perspective to one of the most shameful parts of American history. A great great read. Definitely pick this one up.

I'd never heard of this one before...I might just have to pick it up this summer!
ReplyDeleteI have this on my phone reader but I haven't managed to get into it yet. Glad for the good review.
ReplyDeleteThis is weird- I've been seeing this all over blogland. And my mom just left it on my table after visiting. I think all signs are pointing to me reading this book.
ReplyDeleteI was just talking with a friend of mine and she was saying its such a good read, I can't wait to check it out.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by and commenting today! I LOVED this book. And not just because I was about to be moving to M'ssipi...it had such fabulous character development and I felt like I knew each of them. I didn't want it to end!
ReplyDeleteAnd BTW - amazing goals in 1001 days - wish I'd have thought of that!
I also didn't think I would like this book, but I loved it.
