I'm obviously really big on giving back. I talk about charity pretty often on this blog. However, I've never really volunteered, so when I started my 101 list one of the first things on it was to volunteer somewhere. Didn't matter how, or where, or what the cause, just that I do it. And now I have!
We helped transport this big guy from a high-kill shelter to a rescue so he could be adopted.
Doing transports is a great way to help out animals in need. Dogs and cats are moved from high-kill shelters that no longer have space for them, and are taken to new shelters and rescues where they have a chance of finding homes. It's a super easy way to get involved if you don't have a lot of time. You can volunteer as much or as little as you'd like, and you're always saving the lives of the animals you help move. There's even a short series about transporting dogs on Animal Planet.
Our first transport (The Hubs came too) was really short, only about 45 minutes, and super easy. This big guy was an amazing dog (with an equally amazing brother who was being transported right behind us), I really don't understand how anyone could give him up. I think the phrase "5 dogs really wouldn't be so bad..." actually came out of my mouth when we had to drop him off. Yes really, I would adopt him and his brother - I am after all, insane.
It was hard to drop him off, but I know he'll get a great home in the end. I definitely plan on doing it again too so my abilities at photographing dogs when they're in the back of my car may need to improve a bit.
Awww...you sound like me! We have 5 animals...all rescues. People think we are nuts, but our home would be so empty without them. I think I would of ended up taking this sweet boy home also! I will have to talk to my husband about what you guys do and see if he is interested in learning more about it!!
ReplyDeleteIt was great you posted this. A lot of people (me) don't realize the different ways you can actually help in dog rescue. This is a great way to get involved without having to spend a huge amount of time. The thing I was always scared of was wanting to take them all home. I did see something about a foster parent on Animal Planet that did stick with me--though he liked his fosters and was tempted to keep them, by not adopting them he actually saved so many more lives by opening his home and keeping that one extra spot in the shelter. We just started fostering, yesterday, and I know we need to keep that in mind.
ReplyDeleteI love the new show on Animal Planet. I know its very controversial to transport dogs from the south to new england when there are lots of dogs there needing homes but in the end a dog saved is a dog saved.
ReplyDeleteLove the tongue on that boy!
