Reading: Me Talk Pretty One Day

Me Talk Pretty One Day
I feel like this is a book I should love. David Sedaris is a contributer on NPR (and we all know I love NPR), the book is billed as funny, hip, and a "must read." But I didn't think it was that funny. Sure, there were some funny parts, but I would hardly call the book "hilarious" or "so funny it made Sprite come out my nose." It was just sort of a book.

And I found big chunks of the book, well, sad. Maybe it's dark humor? I never get dark humor. I like my humor full of kittens and cartoons so I'm sure I simply don't get it. And other parts were gross. I see how other people would find it funny, but I'm not the gross humor type. If you are, then you might get more a laugh out of it.

Lack of humorous moments aside, it was still only alright for me. The anecdotes were cute, but I wish they had been pulled together in a more cohesive way. This is also another book that feels like it stopped in the middle. I didn't feel like anything came full circle, or was resolved, no life lessons or revelations were learned. It just ended.

So my final review: 2 out of 5 stars. Readable, but you're not missing out on much if you don't pick this one up.

  1. I used to work in a bookstore and I've never really gotten the Dave Sedaris stuff. I've tried to read it, but never gotten through it.

    So I guess I agree?

  2. Yeah, I know he has other books, but I don't think I'll be picking them up. It just seemed like a bunch of essays thrown together in a semi-chronological order. Not for me.

  3. I feel the same way about David Sedaris. I've read some (but not all) of the books, and I just didn't think any of them were all that great.

  4. Oh man! I love Dave Sedaris. In fact, I just re-read Me Talk Pretty One Day and have decided it's one I have to read on a yearly basis. What I like most about his books is that he shares his daydreams (no matter how absurd) and I find myself laughing because I have some pretty absurd daydreams myself. I'm not one who typically laughs out loud while reading or watching TV but I found myself doing so more than once reading his books.
