What We're Doing With Our Tax Money

I posted before that we got a nice chunk of change back from Uncle Sam, well now we've got a plan for it.

To start, half went straight into our emergency fund. Like I mentioned yesterday, we're thisclose to having six months worth of expenses in there and I can't tell you how freaking awesome it feels.

Then we took $500 so The Hubs and I could spend it on something fun. The Hubs decided to spend his part on a Zune Pass subscription (the subscription will last a looooong time). I'm still not quite sure what I'm going to spend mine on. New clothes? Adobe Photoshop? Put it towards my DSLR fund? I dunno. Whatever it is, I'm sure I will make an impulse decision after mentally over-debating it too long. I know myself, it's what I do.

And the rest of the money is going towards paying down the loan on car #2. We haven't added any extra payments towards this car and it's about time we got started on it. I hate having the payment every month and seeing how much extra interest we're paying is seriously un-fun. So now I'm writing a big fat check out to Chase Auto Finance.

I can't lie. It's a difficult check to write. I'd much rather use the money on a number of other things. Vacation. DLSR. Furniture. The Most Fantastic Blog Giveaway EVER! New Floors. But I have to be a big girl and do the smart thing, right? It's too late now anyway, the check's in the mail!

  1. You know, I've been using Adobe Lightroom to edit photos lately, and I think I like it better than Photoshop. It's a lot cheaper too. I still need to use Photoshop for my job (because I do graphics and templates), but if you just edit photos, then you should download a trial of Lightroom and give it a try. It's really nice.

  2. Kristi - thanks for the input! I know you can download trials of Photoshop so my plan was to do that before I buy anything. I didn't know you could download trials of Lightroom too, I might have to try that and compare the two. I've heard good things about both.

  3. I bought Photoshop elements on ebay for $35 and have yet to install it after several months. I just use picasa to edit because I'm lazy and don't want to learn new technology. doh!

Paying my car off two years early was the best thing I ever did. I love the freedom! I was able to put more than the car payment into savings every month, it just feels great!

  4. we were so good with our tax money this year because we blew our bonus last year in Vegas... something we always wanted to do (it was free money since I had already quite the job but they gave me a bonus two months later)

  5. Is ZunePass the newer, hipper Rhapsody? Isn't it hard being responsible? I'm secretly rooting for you to get a DSLR, I'd like to see the photos you come up with.

  6. Sara - I use picasa too and I worry a little that I won't actually use photo editing software. I'm definitely going to try out the free trials.

Kari - I want to blow our tax money! We always end up being responsible with it though ... maybe next year?

Schwang - I don't know if ZunePass is newer, but they are different things. I dunno, The Hubs likes it, that's all I really know about it :)

  7. Kate, try downloading Gimp. It's free photoshop, basically.

We just put half our uncle Sam money to Chase Auto Finance too. Now we're *this* close to paying off car #1.

    Congratulations!
