Learning About Flash

This week's course is all about learning how to effectively use your flash.

I admit, this is my least favorite course so far. I really wanted to get outside for this lesson (like you're supposed to), but it just didn't happen. All our days have been bright and sunny, not exactly flashworthy lighting.

But in the interest of moving on with it, here are some flash vs. no-flash shots.

With Flash:

Without Flash:

The flash photo has more positives than the non-flash photo. The colors pop more. The ISO is lower, so there is less noise than in the non-flash photo, so it's sharper and clearer picture. However, there is one big thing that just kills the flash photo for me. The shadow.

The shadow behind Nemo just screams, "I USED A FLASH HERE!"

My solution? Turn on the lights and open up the curtains to let more light in.

His tail was going a mile a minute because I called his name so he would look at me.

Much better!

  1. Nemo doesn't look very happy to be having his picture taken,or maybe he just isn't stoked to be on the chair

  2. lol, Kari. I think Nemo was pissed because I had treats in my hand and I kept telling him to "stay!"

And now that I'm looking at the photos, the first two make his head look freakishly huge and the third one makes his head tiny. I swear in real life he has a normal size head...

  3. I like the picture with the flash better. You can see all the details and patterns of Nemo's fur. What a cutie!

  4. I was thinking the same thing...he looks kind of scared. Our pooches know their not allowed on the furniture and sometimes I have them pose on it for photo shoots, and they give that same suspicious look. Oh, and your question about the harnesses is quite timely. We have been using prongs, but brought the harnesses back out after a comment. We tried a couple of fit techniques because the harness kept rubbing Mr. B's armpit, and his leg even came out the other day. We posed the question too, so maybe people can offer other experiences.

  5. I never use flash, my Canon's 'no flash' auto setting is actually really good at drawing any available light in. The pup is looking so cute (and funny) on that small chair!

  6. I promise he wasn't scared. The dogs are allowed on the furniture at our house so that's definitely not an issue here. I wouldn't have asked him to stay up there if he was really scared. :)
