So far the courses have taught us how to use the camera to get great photos. This time we finally tackle composition, otherwise known as how to not take ugly photos.
There are a few easy to remember tips to accomplish this.
Tip #1. Keep it Simple. Eliminate distracting elements from your photos.

Tip #2. Apply the Rule of Thirds. Instead of centering your subject in every photo, imagine that your screen is divided up into thirds and then place your subject at one of the intersecting points.

Tip #3. Keep an Eye on the Horizon. Use the rule of thirds on your horizons. Place the horizon 1/3 or 2/3 up on your photo to create a more dynamic shot.
Tip #4. Frame your shot. Use elements to "frame" your subject.

Tip #5. Fill the Frame. Eliminate wasted space from your photos and let your subject fill up the space.

Tip #6. Try a New Perspective. Examine your subject from different angles.
I didn't take these photos this week, but I think they are good examples of the tips. I've always really liked each of these, and now I can point to the reasons why!

p.s. Have you entered the Giveaway yet?
Those are some excellent shots! I especially like the second one!
ReplyDeleteI was going to say the same thing about liking the second one. I'm doing a photo-exhibition project with my students right now to tell the "true story" of their neighborhoods (that it's not just gangs, and violence, etc). I had read about a couple of techniques, and my kids are coming up with amazing shots. I hadn't known about some other ones, but I'm going to definitely share these ideas with my students as they're taking more photos.
ReplyDeleteThe second is my favorite too :)
ReplyDeletePitties - That sounds like a great project! I bet the kids come up with some amazing photos.
Thank you for the great tips on photography. I have been practicing with my camera and I always struggle with composition. These tips will help!
ReplyDeletePersonally I find any dog in a photo distracting so it would be hard for me to follow the rules :)
