The Story of Edgar Sawtelle is the coming of age story of a young mute boy and his family as they breed a fictional breed of "Sawtelle dogs." And I know you're thinking it, but I really didn't like the book just because of the dogs (although that didn't hurt).
This is a very Hamlet inspired story, something that isn't apparent when you begin the novel (but if you read the blurb you'll make the connection quickly - I don't think that's really a spoiler). When I first made the connection, I was very put off by it. As a former theatre junkie, I didn't feel the need to read a rip off of a Shakesperean play. Still, I'm really glad that I did. Sure, there were bits I could have done without, but overall I enjoyed reading it.
And now I feel as though that paragraph really tells you all that you need to know about the book and I'm not going to risk giving away too much ... I liked it. If you dig the idea of Hamlet with dogs, you might like it too.
