I Am Sew Not Good At This

Over the weekend I decided to tackle something I've never done before: Sewing.

Since I had some trouble in the beginning (I have NEVER sewn anything ever), I enlisted the help of an expert to show me how it's done: My mom. She showed me how to thread the machine (I wouldn't have gotten very far without learning that), sew in a zipper, and lay everything out so it lined up the way it's supposed to.

A couple weeks ago, when I first got my brand new sewing machine, I found this fabric, fell in love with the color (and the price didn't hurt either), and brought it home with me.

I love the subtle waffle pattern

At the time, I had no idea what I was going to do with it (dog bed? pillows? really short curtain?), but I'm so glad I got it anyway. Because I turned it into 2 euro pillow covers.

They're the two big pillows in the back

When I found the flower print pillows at Target (only $4 each!) I knew they would work great with this fabric and the rest of the room I had pulled together.

To make the miracle of me becoming a seamstress a reality, we started by pinning the fabric around the pillows to make sure we had enough material.

Success! We had just enough to make it happen. Then we had to measure everything out and mark our seams. My euro pillows were 26"x26" so we measured accordingly (leaving a little extra space to allow for the pillow puffiness) and then marked off the fabric with a 1/2" seam allowance and cut off the excess.

Once that was done the only complicated part was sewing in the zipper. First we pinned everything where it needed to go.

And then carefully lined up the needle next to the zipper line and sewed it into place.

Once the zipper was in, it was just a matter of sewing 3 straight lines to close up the cover. Squeeze in an overstuffed euro pillow and you're done!

How do the costs break down for my new pillows?

2 Euro Pillows = $20.00 (from Homegoods)
Fabric = $13.00
2 Zippers = $2
Thread = $3
2 18" Pillow Covers = $8.00 (from Target)
Total = $46.00

I'm so happy with how these turned out. The colorful pillows really help brighten up the space and I think there's a certain "luxury" feeling to euro pillows.  I just want to snuggle up in the bed with a good book and read away the day lounging on those pillows ...

Many thanks to my mom for being my hand model while I took these pics. :)

  4. Hot dang girl!! You put a zipper in? I have two Euro's that have been floating around in my trunk of my car that I have wanted to make covers for but I would of never made them removable. But it doesn't look too hard so maybe I'll be clever like you!

  5. Megan - The zipper was the hardest part but it was definitely doable! I have never sewn anything before so if I can do it, I know anyone can!

    I really wanted to have the covers be removable so that I could wash them (or even switch them out later if I want to). In the end, when putting the zippers in, I ended up having to go over the seam twice because I didn't quite get the needle close enough to the zipper the first time - but since you can't tell from the finished product it's okay!

  6. Those look awesome!! There is a "zipper foot" attachment for your machine that will let you get up close to those zippers. Zippers are my sewing nemesis btw. :)

  7. I love the way that this room is coming together. The colors of those pillows are so fun!

    Do we get to see a big reveal of the room soon...?

  9. I think they turned about great! I do sew but I'm zipper-challenged! If you can do it, so can I! ;) Thanks for sharing - I love the color scheme. So pretty!

  10. I have that same sewing machine!!! Love it!!! I can't figure out the zippers either - I'm terrified of them...which is silly I suppose - that's what seam rippers are for.. Anyhow-I enjoy your blog and very cute pillows!
