Right now I am reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy. The book is about a father and son traveling the country in a post-apocalyptic world. So far I am about two thirds of the way through it.
I have to admit, when I first picked it up I wasn't a fan. The book is dark and the imagery is darker. I tend to gravitate towards more light hearted books (even 'chic lit' at times) and this is definitely not that. That said, at this point it's managed to grab my attention. It's possible that I'm finally getting used to the style of writing, or that the writing has moved on from depressing descriptions of the landscape and has developed a little more plot but whatever it is I actually want to get to the end.
I recently learned that a movie based on the book is coming out this fall. I'm not sure how I feel about seeing the movie - I could see it being wildly awful or pretty good - but McCarthy has had a couple other books turned into films (No Country for Old Men and All the Pretty Horses) so I hope Hollywood knows what it's doing.
I can't give a definitive recommendation on this one yet, I think it will entirely depend on how the author ends the story, but so far I'm not sorry that I picked this one up.
